How Do You Get Herpes

You get herpes after you come into contact with Herpes Simplex Virus 1 or Herpes Simplex Virus 2.

You could have caught the herpes virus as a child. Children have a tendency of catching the Herpes Simplex Virus 1 which spreads by skin contact with adults who may have carried the virus. It has to be remembered that adults do not need to have sores for spreading the herpes virus. Children can get the virus from infected adults as a result of a kiss from them or eating from the same utensils or sharing towels.

Herpes Simplex Virus 2 is contracted mainly through sexual activity and contact. There is a higher chance of catching the genital herpes if a person has had multiple partners or came into sexual contact with a person who has been affected by sexually transmitted diseases.

What Causes You to Catch the Herpes?

  1. The virus spreads through close physical contact between people who have the infection. You can catch a herpes virus by touching the cold sores. It has been technically described as viral shedding of an asymptomatic nature. A person who has the Herpes Simplex Virus 1 can pass it on to another by the act of kissing, pinching the cheeks of children and touching the infected person’s skin. It can also be transmitted when you share things like razors, lip balms or silverware.
  2. People catch Herpes Simplex Virus 2 on the genitals after they come into contact with others who have already contracted the virus. This happens through the act of sexual intercourse. If a person has cold sores and engages in oral sex, the virus can spread to other person’s genitals.
  3. Mothers can pass on the herpes virus to their babies during the process of childbirth. If an infant is born during the first genital herpes’ virus outbreak of the mother, the baby can catch the infection.

It has to be noted that once a person gets infected with the herpes virus, it will always stay in the body. After the initial outbreak, the virus will shift from the skin cells to nerve cells. It will stay in the nerve path for a long period of time but it remains in a dormant state. The virus can be activated again.
